Chandra, the Firebrand (2012 Core Set)

28Jul11

It’s no secret that Chandra has been one of the weakest and poorest received of the planeswalker cards. So it is really a big improvement that Chandra got a new, added able adaptation in Magic 2012 core set. M12’s Chandra, the Firebrand is an altered agenda altogether. Out of the new M12 creatures, Chandra, the Firebrand will be a great target to hit.

Planeswalker – Chandra

[+1]: Chandra, the Firebrand deals 1 damage to target creature or player.

[-2]: When you cast your next instant or sorcery spell this turn, copy that spell. You may then choose new targets for the copy.

[-6]: Chandra, the Firebrand deals 6 damage to each of up to 6 target creatures and/or players. You can smack six players and/or creatures with this final ability for a six damage.

Starting Loyalty of 3, This is the right amount of toughness for a planeswalker as a four drop.

I am going to say it right now, this is probably the worst planeswalker printed, and it’s for one simple reason – it really has only one ability you will ever want to use (well, maybe 2 in the right deck), and the other abilities are just not good enough. (Then again, Ajani Goldmane had only one good ability, but it tended to be far better than a Reverberate.) It’s basically limited to combo decks if it somehow does end up being playable, and every time a combo deck is playable in Standard, it’s apparently a “mistake.”

One of the most advantages of her is that her abilities are better than other Chandras. She goes perfectly well with Chandra’s Phoenix, as she should, and she can take out some key threats if she lives long enough.

Apart of this, she is the only planeswalker with only one colored mana symbol in the casting cost. This flexible casting cost means Chandra can be played in more decks. You can play her either in red decks or in a deck where the two main colors are not red.

Additionally, Chandra interacts favorably against other planeswalkers. While she increases her loyalty, she can decrease the loyalty of an enemy planeswalker helping you gain the planeswalker advantage.

There’s a lot of potential here, but at first glance this Chandra seems like merely the best Chandra we have so far.
